Oral Thrush and STDs

Posted on 5/22/2023 by DrGent
Oral Thrush and STDsOral thrush is a fungal infection of the throat and mouth. Candida albicans fungus is responsible for causing oral thrush when it overgrows. Other oral thrush causes include antibiotic use, dry mouth, smoking, weakened immune system, and improperly fitted dentures.

Oral thrush can result in white lesions, mouth redness, throat soreness, difficulty swallowing, and yellow or creamy patches on the tongue. It can also affect people of all ages, but it mainly occurs in older people and children since their immune system is weak.

On the other hand, oral sex and other sexual activities are responsible for causing oral STDs. The most prevalent ones comprise gonorrhea, syphilis, and herpes.

Symptoms of Oral STDs

Lesions or sores

STDs can make you have small lesions or sores on the tongue, lips, gums, throat, and inner cheeks. The sores may inflame or be swollen and turn white, red, or yellow after some time.

Ulcers are open sores in your mouth or lips. These lesions can be painful, bleed, and discharge pus.

Sore throat

People suffering from gonorrhea and chlamydia are likely to have a sore throat. This can induce other oral health problems, such as severe throat pain and difficulty swallowing.

How to Prevent Oral Thrush and STDs

Individuals with STDs will often have bumps and growths in their mouths and lips, which are very painful. You can prevent oral thrush by practicing good oral hygiene. Brush your teeth twice a day, floss daily, avoid taking sugary food, quit smoking, and most importantly, ensure you take a balanced diet.

To prevent oral STDs, ensure you have safe sex, limit your sexual partners, and take regular STD tests. Also, if your partner has symptoms of an STD, don't engage in sexual contact. If you are concerned you may have an Oral STD, reach out to us to get tested.
