How Often Should You Floss?

Posted on 7/24/2023 by DrGent
How Often Should You Floss? Flossing is a vital oral hygiene practice. Dental floss is a thin, soft thread that allows you to clean in between your teeth. Even though brushing your teeth twice daily is an important dental practice, flossing allows you to clean in areas that your toothbrush cannot get to.

Flossing cleans not only between your teeth, but it also helps to clean beyond the gum line. Plaque accumulates in your gum line and in between your teeth. If you do not clean these areas, the plaque will accumulate and harden, forming tartar. This can lead to gum diseases.

How Often Should I Floss?

According to the American Dental Association, floss your teeth once daily and brush your teeth at least twice daily. You also need to keep up with your dental appointments as directed by your dentist.

When Should I Floss?

It does not matter what time you floss. You can choose to incorporate your flossing either in the morning as part of your morning routine or at night before you go to bed.

Flossing Or Brushing, Which One Comes First?

The American Dental Association states that either flossing or brushing can come first. However, they recommend starting with flossing. If you brush and then floss, the food particles from flossing will remain in your mouth. Flossing will help to lift food particles that may be stuck in your teeth. Brushing will help to remove these food particles from the mouth. Thus, it is better to start by flossing.

To ensure that your teeth and gums remain strong and healthy, it is important to have a good oral care routine. This routine should involve more than just brushing your teeth twice daily. Make sure that you also floss daily to remove food particles that may be stuck in-between teeth.
