Is Tooth Sensitivity Curable

Posted on 8/21/2023 by Sola Smile Co
Is Tooth Sensitivity CurableTooth sensitivity is a common dental problem that affects many people in the United States. Studies by the Academy of General Surgery show that more than 40 million adults in the United States experience tooth sensitivity. If you tend to experience sharp pain or discomfort when you eat or drink cold or hot foods or drinks, then you may have tooth sensitivity. Apart from cold and hot foods or drinks, cold air and acidic foods or beverages may also cause irritation. When the enamel of the tooth wears out and exposes the dentin, tooth sensitivity occurs.

Tooth sensitivity can be caused by several factors, such as brushing your teeth too hard or grinding your teeth at night. However, some people just have sensitive teeth because they have thinner enamel. Sensitivity can also occur if you have gum recession, meaning that your teeth are exposed.

Is Sensitivity Curable?

We cannot permanently cure sensitivity. However, there are several medical solutions that can help to deal with the sensitivity. You can receive medical treatment to ease the pain caused by sensitivity. If you are experiencing sensitivity, it is best to consult with your dentist who can guide you on the best treatment options.

Treating Tooth Sensitivity

The treatment course for tooth sensitivity will depend on the cause of the problem. Your dentist can advise on the following treatments to lessen sensitivity;

Fluoride

Fluoride helps to strengthen the tooth and reduce pain. Your dentist will apply fluoride to the sensitive areas of your teeth. The dentist may even offer a fluoride prescription for use at home.

Desensitizing Toothpaste

Using desensitizing toothpaste is a common treatment method for sensitive teeth. Your dentist will suggest the best desensitizing toothpaste. After several applications, the desensitizing toothpaste will block the pain caused by sensitivity.

Root Canal

If all other treatment options fail, then your dentist will recommend a root canal. This is only done in severe cases as the last resort. Although root canals are intensive, they are the most effective way of dealing with tooth sensitivity.

It is important to maintain a strict daily routine to stop the sensitivity from occurring. Thus, brush your teeth at least twice daily, floss daily, and keep up with your dental appointments. Additionally, avoid highly acidic foods and drinks.
