What Is Teeth Luxation?

Posted on 3/15/2024 by Weo Admin
Beautiful Black woman smiling after making appointment at Sola Smile Co. in Austin, TXOur teeth are incredibly strong, but sometimes, an impact or accident can cause them to move or loosen from their sockets. This is known as teeth luxation, and while it can be a scary experience, it is important to remember that with prompt attention, your dentist can often save the tooth and restore your smile.

Types of Teeth Luxation

Teeth luxation occurs when a force disrupts the ligaments and tissues that hold your tooth in place. This can cause the tooth to become loose, move out of position, or even become completely displaced from its socket. There are different types of luxation, depending on the direction the tooth moves:

Concussion

This type involves mild displacement of the tooth without any loosening or mobility. The tooth may be tender to touch but remains in its socket.

Subluxation

Subluxation is similar to concussion but involves more mobility of the tooth. The tooth may be tender, and there could be slight movement, but it remains in its socket.

Extrusion

Extrusion happens when a tooth is partially pushed out of its socket, causing it to stick out. The tooth appears longer than usual, and there may be bleeding from the gum line.

Lateral Luxation

Lateral luxation results in horizontal displacement of the tooth within its socket, causing it to move sideways. This type of luxation often significantly damages the surrounding tissues and bone.

Intrusion

Intrusion is the displacement of the tooth into the socket toward the jawbone. This can cause severe damage to the tooth root and surrounding structures.

Avulsion

An avulsion is the complete displacement of the tooth from its socket, resulting in it being knocked out entirely. This is considered one of the most severe forms of tooth luxation.

Seeking Help for Teeth Luxation

Prompt treatment is essential for teeth luxation. A dentist will examine the tooth, take X-rays, and determine the type and severity of the luxation before recommending the appropriate treatment, which may include repositioning, splinting, or root canal therapy.

Remember, prompt attention and proper treatment can give your smile a bright future even after experiencing teeth luxation. So, visit our dentist if you experience any signs or symptoms that might indicate this dental issue.
