What Are Eye Teeth?

Instead, your eye teeth are called eye teeth because of their location in your jaws. Eye teeth are very important, so you need to know where they are and how to keep them healthy. Here are some essential facts about eye teeth.

Why Are These Teeth Called Eye Teeth?

You may call them eye teeth, but many people call them canines. You may also call them cuspid teeth. Eye teeth are located directly below your eyes in your jaw. They are between your incisors, which are the front four teeth in each jaw, and your premolars. Most children get their permanent eye teeth between the ages of ten and thirteen. Both children and adults have eye teeth, whether they have baby or permanent teeth.

What Are Your Eye Teeth Used For?

While some of your teeth have more than one job, your eye teeth only have one job: to tear your food. Canines are the sharpest and longest teeth in your jaw, which is why some people call them canines, as they closely resemble the fangs of a dog. Eye teeth specialize in tearing bits of food from the piece - such as bites of chicken. They are so important that if you lose your eye teeth, it will be very difficult for you to tear food. You need to be sure you are cleaning and protecting your eye teeth.

Brushing and Flossing Your Eye Teeth

In general, your eye teeth are much less prone to cavities than your premolars and molars. However, it is possible for you to develop a cavity on your eye teeth, especially along the back of your teeth. Be sure that you brush and floss your eye teeth each day, paying attention to flossing food particles from between your canines, incisors, and premolars.

If you think you may have a cavity on one of your eye teeth, it is very important you come in and visit us as soon as possible so we can have a look at your teeth. Reach out to us today for more information and to set an appointment.
