Thyroid Disease and Your Oral Health

Posted on 6/1/2026 by Sola Smile Co
Young woman with straight long brown hair drinking water at her desk. Let's talk about something you might not realize is connected to your smile: your thyroid! Many people know that thyroid disease affects things like energy levels and weight, but its impact on your oral health is often overlooked. Understanding this connection is crucial for maintaining a healthy mouth and a healthy body. This article will explore how thyroid issues can show up in your mouth and what you can do about it.

What is Thyroid Disease?

Your thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland in your neck. It produces hormones that control your metabolism – how your body uses energy. When the thyroid isn't working correctly, it can produce too many hormones (hyperthyroidism) or not enough (hypothyroidism). Both conditions can lead to a range of health problems, and surprisingly, some of these problems can affect your mouth.

How Thyroid Disease Affects Your Mouth

Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism can manifest in your oral health.

Hypothyroidism (Underactive Thyroid):
•  Dry Mouth (Xerostomia): Reduced saliva production is a common symptom. Saliva is essential for washing away food particles, neutralizing acids, and fighting bacteria. Without enough saliva, you're at a higher risk for cavities and gum disease.
•  Enlarged Tongue (Macroglossia): In some cases, hypothyroidism can cause the tongue to become enlarged, which can lead to difficulty speaking, chewing, or even breathing.
•  Delayed Tooth Eruption: In children, hypothyroidism can delay the eruption of permanent teeth.
•  Poor Wound Healing: Reduced thyroid function can slow down the healing process after dental procedures.
•  Increased Risk of Infection: A weakened immune system can make you more susceptible to oral infections like thrush.

Hyperthyroidism (Overactive Thyroid):
•  Accelerated Tooth Eruption: In children, hyperthyroidism can speed up the eruption of permanent teeth.
•  Increased Risk of Cavities: While hyperthyroidism itself might not directly cause cavities, the associated anxiety and nervousness can sometimes lead to poor oral hygiene habits.
•  Osteoporosis: Hyperthyroidism can contribute to bone loss, including in the jawbone, which can affect tooth support.
•  Burning Mouth Syndrome: Some individuals with hyperthyroidism experience a burning sensation in their mouth.

What You Can Do

The good news is that many of these oral health issues can be managed with proper care and communication between your dentist and your physician.
•  Tell Your Dentist: Always inform your dentist if you have thyroid disease or are taking thyroid medication. This information is crucial for them to provide you with the best possible care.
•  Maintain Excellent Oral Hygiene: Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and floss daily. This is even more important if you have dry mouth.
•  Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to help combat dry mouth.
•  Use Saliva Substitutes: If dry mouth is a persistent problem, consider using over-the-counter saliva substitutes or artificial saliva products.
•  Regular Dental Checkups: Regular dental visits are essential for early detection and prevention of oral health problems. Your dentist can monitor your oral health and recommend appropriate treatments.
•  Work with Your Physician: Make sure your thyroid condition is well-managed by your physician. Proper medication and monitoring can help minimize the oral health effects.

The Importance of Prevention Dentistry

By understanding the connection between thyroid disease and oral health, you can take proactive steps to protect your smile. Prevention dentistry, which includes regular checkups, good oral hygiene practices, and open communication with your dental team, is key to maintaining a healthy mouth, especially if you have a thyroid condition. Working together with your dentist and physician ensures comprehensive care for both your oral and overall health.
